NPR : Are Computer Keyboards Dishwasher Safe?

Studies show that computer keyboards have more bacteria than toilet seats. But it’s hard to clean all those keys. So some people advocate an extreme solution: Throw your keyboard in your dishwasher.

I’ve done this twice before with 100% success. In both cases a sugary drink was spilled on the keyboard and keys started sticking. I just washed on the short cycle alone in the dishwasher (without soap) and let it dry for a few days before plugging it back in. My other option of course was to throw the keyboards away so I really didn’t have anything to lose.

A small amount of soap shouldn’t hurt, just be sure to shake all the water out and let it dry for a few days.

I have not tried this on a wireless keyboard, but I suspect it would work, be sure to take the batteries out first.
