Exploding ID Cards!

Ambiguous

I think someone should try to blow up a plane with a piece of ID, just to watch the TSA’s mind implode.

Danny suggested the John Gilmore would be the perfect R&D funder.

…And if I mysteriously vanish in the next 48 hours, you’ll know the government is idiotic.

Most of already assume the government is idiotic.

Ethanol

David Pimental, a leading Cornell University agricultural expert, has calculated that powering the average U.S. automobile for one year on ethanol (blended with gasoline) derived from corn would require 11 acres of farmland, the same space needed to grow a year’s supply of food for seven people. Adding up the energy costs of corn production and its conversion into ethanol, 131,000 BTUs are needed to make one gallon of ethanol. One gallon of ethanol has an energy value of only 77,000 BTUS. Thus, 70 percent more energy is required to produce ethanol than the energy that actually is in it. Every time you make one gallon of ethanol, there is a net energy loss of 54,000 BTUs.

I know a lot of people who’ve been claiming this for years. Hopefully more people will realize that ethanol (and in my opinion hydrogen too) are not viable long term solutions to our dependence on oil unless we find a much more efficient way to product them.

ICE ROCKS® - Water Bank of America Inc. (WBOA)

ICE ROCKS® are secured ice cubes made from spring water and ready to be frozen. These cubes, to be consumed within two (2) years, are hermetically packaged in disposable, recyclable containers, providing the user with a complete guarantee with regard to hygiene and safety, while respecting the environment. ICE ROCKS® uses a patented technology, providing a container of refreshing ice cubes that are pure and hygienic.

Why the hell didn’t I think of this! Unfrozen ice cubes, READY TO FREEZE! OMG, this is going to change the world! Oh wait, I can get that from the local municipality, it’s called water. Granted ICE ROCKS claim they are “pure” and perfect with that glass of scotch, but come on now. Is this anything that a Brita filter and a goold old fashioned ice cube tray can’t produce?

Texas Public Radio - Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation

Between August 7 and August 18, 2006, Texas Public Radio presented on-air readings of the family memoir of San Antonio author John Phillip Santos, Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation. The story, read by Santos himself, was broadcast on KSTX 89.1 FM. The chapters are archived on this page to listen online or download as MP3 files.

Free audio book at Texas Public Radio. I caught a good bit of this on the air as I worked on my kayak. I look forward to listening to the rest during my evening commute.

RadioShack Uses E-Mail to Fire Employees

RadioShack Corp. notified about 400 workers by e-mail that they were being dismissed immediately as part of planned job cuts.

Employees at the Fort Worth headquarters got messages Tuesday morning saying: “The work force reduction notification is currently in progress. Unfortunately your position is one that has been eliminated.”

Call me old fashioned, but I think sending an email has to be about the lowest way to terminate someone.

This Is What A Terrorist Looks Like

According to a new poll, a pretty significant number of people in the U.S. support racial profiling at airports. Of the 1,080 surveyed, 60 percent said authorities should single out people who look “Middle Eastern” for security screenings at such locations as train stations and airports.

Interesting spin on racial profiling.

Visiting such old BBSes is incredible — it’s like traveling back in time to the early-mid 1990s. Each BBS is a unique a time capsule, stocked with trinkets and ephemera from the period. On message boards, you’ll find posts from 1994 about the O.J. Simpson trial and which player-made Doom levels are best. In file transfer sections you’ll run across large archives of long-forgotten Windows 3.1 screen savers.

A bit of a blast from yesteryear.

Rare Carbon Dioxide “Lake” Found Under the Ocean, Scientists Report

A team of scientists based in Japan and Germany has found an unusual “lake” of liquid carbon dioxide beneath the ocean floor.

On Earth’s surface carbon dioxide (CO2) is normally a gas, but in the cold, high-pressure ocean depths it cools and becomes a liquid.

I’m wondering what happens if somehow this stuff is disturbed and boils to the surface.
