Eric Peltzer’s Electric Bicycle
Eric Peltzer’s Electric Bicycle
I have added an electric power assist onto a GT mountain bike. It is much more powerful than typical electric bikes. The basic motivation for this was to have a fun and efficient and environmentally friendly way to stay out my car for short trips around town, and also as a silent trail bike for exploring the hills. It can still be pedaled. When I first put this together it was even more of a blast to ride than I had envisioned. I have seen 70 year old people get on this bike and laugh like little kids - it’s like a magic hand is silently boosting you along.
A very good article on bulding an electric bike from scratch. I’ve been tempted to do this, but I don’t think I’d be able to carry enough batteries or move fast enough for my 30 mile commute.
hey maybe you can make it. i am working on a bike this week that rakes 40 mins battery time in hilly conditions. can certainly do 30 miles town/city with pedaling 50/60+miles in 2 hours.
agreed its not practical for all situations, but cant beat 5p ( £0.05p ) per charge 30 miles
the ultimate hippy wagon , that outdrags a 50cc (shh)

Speed is the other problem. I’m not yet willing to lengthen my commute by that much. In the car I can do the 30 miles in about 25 minutes. If I had a scooter or electric bike I’d be happy with an hour but not much more than that.
30 miles at 30 mph in hilly country would be tough but certainly not impossible. We’ve got showers at work now so pedal assist is feasible too.
