Damn Interesting » The Smoldering Ruins of Centralia

Another interesting story.

There is a small town in Pennsylvania called Ashland where Route 61’s northbound traffic is temporarily branched onto a short detour. Exactly what the detour is circumventing is not immediately clear to travelers, however few passers-by pay it any mind… a detour is nothing unusual. But anyone who ignores the detour and ventures along the original route 61 highway will soon encounter an abrupt and unexplained road closure. Beyond it lies a town filled with overgrown streets, smoldering earth, and ominous warning signs. It is the remains of the borough of Centralia.

Cool Hunting: Rubik’s Sudoku

Add this to my wish list.

Rubik’s x Sudoko = this travel friendly, programable game. No word on the official Rubik’s site but the game is already hitting (virtual) store shelves in advance of its expected U.S. release in May 2006

Ruby on Rails

Rails 1.1 is out for anyone who cares.

Rails is a full-stack framework for developing database-backed web applications according to the Model-View-Control pattern. From the Ajax in the view, to the request and response in the controller, to the domain model wrapping the database, Rails gives you a pure-Ruby development environment. To go live, all you need to add is a database and a web server.

An insanely large scale model of the USS Harry S Truman (CVN75). There’s a lot of attention to detail. If anyone knows of a writeup about this model, please let me know in the comments and I’ll include links here.

Words For My Enjoyment » Blog Archive » I Am Afraid of Keychain Clutterers

The saga of keychain clutterers began simply, like any other huge problem in society. People all had keys and they all looked the same and so people set out to find a way to make people’s keychains appear different. It started with simple engraved plates or initials from your name — a simple P or a simple P.D. was all that was needed. It was simple back then, when all you had to do was turn that rotating keychain kiosk at the hardware store in circles to find the letter that would set your keys apart from everyone else’s.

Quicksilverscreen.com: Self Cooling Beer Can

Another complete waste of resources just for the love of a cold beer. While beer is arguably more important and certainly tastier than the artificially sweetened crap that Wolfgang Puck sells it seems like there’s got to be a better way to keep/make it cool.

“The I.C. Canâ„¢ is the result of the solid partnership of Tempra Technology and Crown Holdings, who are currently discussing commercialization and marketing of this self-refridgerating can to top beverage companies. Imagine: an icy cold beverage without refrigerated vending machines or bulky ice chests.

WOAI: San Antonio News - Flying Cow Leaves Two Police Cars in Flames

Yikes, flying cows. Time for a thicker windshield. FYI, Seguin is about 20 miles east of my place.

Talk about a wild night near Seguin. A cow came flying out of its trailer, sent DPS and police scrambling, and left two police cars going up in flames.

This looks like something I should investigate some. I’ve been using a custom script to fetch and post feeds to a wordpress blog, but it lacks any handy ui for adding feeds.

Spore Gameplay Video - Google Video

This looks like an awesome game. The official site is here: http://www.spore.com/ but doesn’t have much info. If anyone can find out when/if this product comes up for sale please let me know.

Will Wright talking at the 2005 Game Developer’s Conference about ‘Spore’, which looks like it could possibly be the best video game ever.
